The opening of the new Powers Elementary School on South Lake Street has been delayed until January 2020.
Moving the completion date back from August 2019 will save the district about $200,000, education officials said.
“Construction will be completed in November, allowing two full months of fine-tuning prior to welcoming students and staff for classes in January 2020,” said a release from superintendent Steven Sayers. “Students and staff will return from winter break into a new school building.”
The money saved will be used for classroom furnishings and technology.
“This decision is more economically feasible for our district and better for the education of our students,” said Sayers.
A transition plan will be developed starting next month. Expect details to be released in coming months.
